The Santa Maria area, were the first settlement on the island was based because of the perfect climate and seaside location. This is were all our houses are located. This part of Funchal (zona velha) is mostly unchanged, houses have been here for over a hundred years, some for well over four centuries. Here you can still find local grocers, farmers market, beaches, bakeries, cafés and lots of tiny interesting shops. A thriving art scene, there are the painted doors of Santa Maria to see, and lots of artists studio as well.
Madeira is bursting with places to visit. Funchal is a cosmopolitan city dating back 600 years. Since then it has been a commercial hub, facing the sea and making the most of the mild climate. The rest of the island is an instagram dream of stunning coastline, lush green mountains and doll-houses made of stone dotting the hills.
